as we are
Germaine Acogny
Gregory Maqoma
In 2026, Dance Reflections by Van Cleef & Arpels is supporting Théâtre de la Ville for the presentation of Bantu by Gregory Maqoma, presented in double bill with Josephine by Germaine Acogny and Alesandra Seutin. Both works are brought together during an evening titled as we are.
At the age of 82, Germaine Acogny is a phenomenon: Maurice Béjart’s “spiritual daughter” explores the life and struggles of Josephine Baker, from her rebellion against racism to her involvement in the Resistance. A pairing so natural that it has met with acclaim wherever it is shown. Gregory Maqoma responds with a piece for twelve dancers from different traditions, uniting their practices in a joyful fellowship that pays tribute to the teachings of Germaine Acogny and her famous École des Sables. A monument to Africa's youth and modernity rendered in a frenetic whirlwind, Bantu celebrates the strength and beauty of life. Gregory Maqoma also brings to mind the social realities of the continent—and, in the spirit of Josephine’s dream, he brings to life a universal humanity.
