Solo Improvisation
Boris Charmatz

In 2025, Dance Reflections by Van Cleef & Arpels is supporting the creation of Solo Improvisation by Boris Charmatz and its presentation at Centre Pompidou - Metz.
Dancer and choreographer Boris Charmatz has always been a practitioner of improvisation, often in collaboration with artists who have singular writing styles, including choreographer Meg Stuart and musician Médéric Collignon. "In improv, I like to draw on the ruins of memory or to activate the senses through contact with materials. I need to step on stage feeling nourished. I take the time to drift. The more prepared I am, the freer I feel on stage."
In his solo, SOMNOLE, presented at Centre Pompidou-Metz in 2024, Boris Charmatz danced and whistled continuously, using his breath to produce the only music. Performed at the heart of Katharina Grosse's "Shifting the Stars" exhibition at Centre Pompidou-Metz's Grande Nef, this Solo Improvisation, which also serves as a first step toward the creation of a future piece, is an exploration of silence.
“The more prepared I am, the freer I feel on stage.”
