Kinetic
With Brigel Gjoka
In 2026, Dance Reflections by Van Cleef & Arpels™ is organizing, in collaboration with the China Shanghai International Arts Festival, the workshop Kinetic taught by Brigel Gjoka, as part of the Dance Reflections by Van Cleef & Arpels™ Festival in Shanghai.
Mechanical Energy and the Distribution of Effort in Choreographic Composition
Coming from a background in ballet and folk dance and immersed in contemporary dance for more than two decades, Brigel Gjoka's approach to movement explores the dialogue between technique, structure, and freedom. The workshop investigates kinetic energy as a driving force for movement, examining how it travels through the complexity of the body's anatomy. Participants explore the articulation and independence of joints and body parts, working with counterpoint to generate multiple and simultaneous physical dynamics throughout the body. Speed and deceleration become tools to navigate space, while the relationship between effort and ease sharpens clarity, timing, and intention. These principles will be explored through choreographic material from When Mountains Cry, Gjoka's latest creation for Xie Xin Dance Theater, allowing participants to experience how this physical research translates into choreographic language, composition, and repertoire.
