British-American choreographer Ruth Childs and French visual artist Cécile Bouffard are interested in fleeting impulses, bodily memory and the afterlives of folklore. Both an installation and a performance for three dancers, Such a Devoted Bunch explores devotion and obsession through movement and matter.
Since their first encounter, Ruth Childs and Cécile Bouffard have identified striking resonances in each other’s work. In particular, Childs has drawn on forms present in Bouffard’s sculptures to develop a reflection on play and a reimagination of gesture. Together, their practices enter into dialogue across genres and sensibilities, creating a sensory environment in which matter, sound and movement intertwine. This new work assembles a fantastical community—a "bunch" of bodies that seem animated by the same fervor and devotion. How does collective enthusiasm emerge? How do modes of belonging weave together? Such a Devoted Bunch traces a community of bodies and objects that attract and repel one another, moving between intimacy and collectivity, belief and release.
