TURNING_Orlando's Version

Alessandro Sciarroni

Dancers on pointe performing TURNING Orlando’s version by Alessandro Sciarroni

In 2020, Dance Reflections by Van Cleef & Arpels is supporting choreographer Alessandro Sciarroni for his new creation TURNING_Orlando’s Version.

With TURNING Orlando’s version, Alessandro Sciarroni explores the practice of ballet, particularly pointe work.

As in Virginia Woolf’s eponymous novel, “Orlando” deals with a circular transformation, summoning viewers to navigate a mystery: does the performance portray a person or a palm-studded Floridian town awaiting a hurricane?

The work is a new chapter of a larger project (TURNING) inspired by the migration pattern of certain animals that, in their final days of life, return to the land of their birth to reproduce and die. “Turning” takes on a literal sense on stage with bodies revolving on their axis. The performance evolves like an emotional, psycho-physical journey, a perpetual dance that reflects the diverse interpretations of the word “turn,” which can also mean “develop” or “change.”

This production displays a deep-seated bond with the mysterious power of animals, particularly their transhumance practices, which appear as vibrant as silhouettes on the horizon.
