Amala Dianor

Self-taught hip-hop dancer Amala Dianor built a remarkable career even before attending the Centre National de Danse Contemporaine d’Angers, from which he graduated in 2002. He then spent a decade as a dancer, drawing on a wide range of techniques. In 2012, he founded his own company after winning two awards at the 2011 Reconnaissance competition for his first choreography, Crossroad. The choreographer quickly gained recognition for the uniqueness of his elegant and organic choreographic language, developed through a formal exploration of movement at the intersection of various styles. Gliding effortlessly from one style to another, he distills choreographic techniques to their essence, stripping away their virtuosic display to reveal the raw movement beneath. Drawn to human encounters and dialogue, he creates a hybrid dance that blends diverse forms, poetically exploring otherness through movement.

Since 2014, he has collaborated with electro-soul composer Awir Leon, who creates the music for his shows. Dianor also works regularly with musicians, visual artists, actors, writers and calligraphers. In 2019, he was appointed a Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters. In 2021, together with visual artist Grégoire Korganow, he created a collection of dance films titled CinéDanse, which already includes six short films that have been selected for prestigious festivals. In 2022, he was one of four European choreographers selected by the Big Pulse Dance Alliance. That same year, he launched Siguifin, a collaborative project presented across Europe that highlights the creativity of West African artists. He also created a piece for South Africa's Via Katlehong Dance, premiered at the Avignon Festival. In 2023, the choreographer created a filmed dance concert, "Love You Drink Water," and DUB, a large-scale work for 11 dancers from around the world featuring live music, in collaboration with composer Awir Léon and visual artist Grégoire Korganow.
His company now has 21 works in its repertoire and performs an average of 90 shows per year in France and around the world, with the support of prestigious institutions. A prolific artist, he enjoys grounding his artistic exploration in enduring themes and passing on his knowledge.

Currently, Amala Dianor is affiliated with the Théâtre de Mâcon, a national theater (2023–2025); Quinconces & l’Espal, a national theater in Le Mans; and Touka-Danses, the CDCN in French Guiana (2021–2024). Since 2020, he has received support from the BNP Paribas Foundation for all of his projects.
