The title "TAMUJUNTU" is not easy to translate. The expression "tamo junto", a shortened form of "estamos juntos," roughly means: "we're in this together," "it's a deal" or "we'll get there". It conveys empathy, solidarity and a sense of connection between friends in the face of adversity. By spelling the expression phonetically as "tamujuntu," Paulo Azevedo highlights the natural links between language and culture, a concept embodied by dancers originating from the two countries involved in the project. The vocal and visual repetition of the letter "u" in this reworked Brazilian expression calls to mind a word important to South African culture, "Ubuntu". The title invites the imagination to explore these words, their meanings and the worlds they open.
