Territoires
Mathilde Monnier
In 2024, Dance Reflections by Van Cleef & Arpels is supporting the Festival d'Automne à Paris 2024 for the presentation of Territoires by Mathilde Monnier.
In Territoires, Mathilde Monnier will be taking over the galleries of the Centre Pompidou during the course of a weekend in order to bring us a piece that deals with memory and circulation, "a collection of gestures from her work over the past thirty years". In doing so, the choreographer sets up the possibility of playing out memory in the present, from now onwards, or by means of anticipation.
How can we construct a dance memory that does not revolve around the mere reconstruction of shows? The question posed by Mathilde Monnier is the following: how can we construct a dance memory capable of reducing the quintessence of the works to effects of gestural quotations? With the Centre Pompidou preparing to shut down for major renovation work, the Musée National d'Art Moderne becomes the ideal playing space for the choreographer to delve into these territories. From one piece to the next, Mathilde Monnier has built up a unique choreographic body of work that sets up a dialogue with text and contemporary art, music and documentary. Never knowing quite where we might find her, this indomitable artist once again defies all expectations. Territoires makes it possible to put these gestures back into circulation, and to bring them up to date. "By taking the gestures from the show out of their choreographic context, we render them current and autonomous once again. They can then be offered to the spectators as gestures for the present." Territoires is a work of art which reminds us that we are alive.
