Drumming Live

Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker

In 2022, Dance Reflections by Van Cleef & Arpels is supporting Romaeuropa Festival to present Drumming Live by Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker / Rosas.

In 1998, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker reconnected with the music of Steve Reich, reviving her principles of dance composition. Building on Drumming’s foundation of haunting percussion rhythms, the choreographer fashions a performance whose formal outline and geometric structure upend perceptions.

Starting with an introductory prompt, Drumming Live combines canons, as well as mirrored, inverted and staggered phrases: the work seems to draw from a boundless choreographic palette, finely shaped to reflect the golden ratio, while at the same time playing on the percussion leitmotifs. Drumming Live engulfs the audience in many combinatorics, all the while giving viewers the chance to understand and to follow the architecture of motion as dancers perform in rhythmic rotation.

With the Ictus ensemble on stage, Drumming Live asserts the interdependency of the senses: eyes, ears and mind unite to drink in the structure taking shape.
