In 2022, Dance Reflections by Van Cleef & Arpels is presenting When we speak I feel myself, Opening, a piece by SERAFINE1369, in collaboration with Sadler's Wells as part of the first Dance Reflections by Van Cleef & Arpels Festival in London.

When one thing shifts, so does everything else. Something simple. Something mythological. Something about the weight of each gesture. Something about the ways that forces form bodies.

A study in walking and weight-distribution, thinking about how we move with what we must carry, heaviness and lightness, light and dark, and the shifting perception of time. Tuning to micro movements, the subconscious pull marking the beginning of a feeling connects multiple cycles both internal and external.

Working with the detail of sensory experience, When we speak I feel myself, Opening seeks to give voice to sensations and impulses as they rise to the surface.

A duet by SERAFINE1369 performed with Fernanda Muñoz-Newsome. SERAFINE1369 is the London-based artist and dancer Jamila Johnson-Small, one half of Sadler’s Wells New Wave Associate Project O.

About the artist

Portrait of Jamila Johnson-Small

SERAFINE1369 is the London based artist and dancer Jamila Johnson-Small. They work with dancing as a philosophical undertaking, a political project with ethical psycho-spiritual ramifications for being-in-the-world; dancing as intimate technology.

Their work is informed by research into movement and dance as a tool for divination, decoding messages from an oracular body - on personal/structural/symptomatic/somatic/psychic levels - to be processed through the medium of choreography. Their shows are stage/dreamspace/battleground, decompositions, atmospheric landscapes created through the live unfolding of the tensions between things that produce meaning.
